I want to ride mein Fahrrad

The good people at the Technical University of Dresden where Marty is working have been extraordinarily generous to us in the last month or so. I have already mentioned fabulous Sabine (who is taking us to another castle in about an hour :) ), but the Professor, Fromut has also been outstanding and has lent us a laser printer for our room and, most recently, a rad (bike- see right).

Biking is very popular here and there are bike lanes alongside all of the major roads. Oddly, cycle helmets aren't compulsory, but having a bell on your bicycle is! For a girl from NZ, it feels very daring to speed along without a helmet. We're off on a week's cycle tour along the Baltic Coast next month and it's nice to remember what a bike feels like. I'm kinda hoping that my touring bike will be a girl-bike (see picture on the left), which the germans seem much keener on than NZers are... I think they are fab!

hey, just discovered your blog! Don't forget you are welcome in Denmark :-)

girl bikes are definitely the way to go! I have an oldfashioned mary poppins style, basket on the front one gear groover... bike about 10kms on it every day -love it!

btw. regarding the survey... i have had mixed experiences on lufthansa, one very bad experience, but i would have to say that Aeroflot is worse... had broken seat and very bitchy hostess... unbelievable.

Hi Kate,

Nice to hear from you- it's been a while, eh?!? What are you up to in Denmark? We are actually going to Copenhagen for M to go to a conference in May... Marty says that you don't live in Copenhagen... but I'm not sure where you do live....

anyhow, hope all is well,

Rochelle

I live in Odense (1.5 hour train ride from Cph). I'm having some friends from France visit in May (14-20th) and will probably be going to Cph with them to show off the city. When will you be there? perhaps we could meet? I love to play tour guide :-)

My worst airline ever is Egypt air. I think their biggest problem is that women can't work for them so their toilets are bad even by Egyptian standards, the food is the worst airline food I've ever eaten, the service is terrible if existent, they refuse to check bags through to final destinations unless you give them backsheesh (bribe/tip) and the plane felt like it would fall apart at any moment. And my seat was broken. And they don't bother with safety announcements.

Hi Tim, that sounds like a fun trip :) A broken seat is bad news... I think you can put up with a lot if you have a reasonable seat!

As it happens, we are in Copenhagen from 20-24 May... I think Marty is planning to email you...
